From Sea to Mountain
....We work up this morning in the soothing sound of  South China Sea.
Tonight we will sleep in chilly cold of Mount Kinabalu....

SEASIDE TRAVELLERS INN

       SEASIDE TRAVELLERS INN

Tel: 088-750555 Managed by Megalife Sdn. Bhd.

Seaside Travellers Inn is located on the right hand side of the new Papar Highway in Kinarut Town. A 20 Km drive from Kota Kinabalu city center along Papar new road. Those who are unfamiliar with this new highway can easily missed the right hand turn to new highway instead drive straight to the old Papar road.

The inn has a fantastic view of the sea and islands. The gray sandy beach is not as clean, sea water near the shore is muddy yellowish but the distant sea water is attractively blue.

There are quite a lot of trees and colorful flowering plants around this inn.

Jumping Spider in Seaside TRAVELLERS Inn

Photo left - The most fiercest jumping spider we ever seen. Praying on the fierce Red Tree Ant. The spider itself has 3 legs missing.

Xing discover this green jumping spider with its prey - a red tree ant. Red Ants in Malaysia, both big and small species, are known to bit any living creature that cross their way. Especially this type of big red ant in above photo. They seem to have no predators, no birds, no frog or any animals are seen eating this type of red ant. Human also avoid them.

Now for the first time we learn that this red ant has a predator - this species of green lynx spider.

This green spider is also a new species in our own family spider catalogue.

BE AWARE OF THE JELLY FISH

I woke up at 6:00 am early in the morning and took a stroll to the beach. The sea is calm. In the distance lie some green islands. Seems a nice place to deep in the warm sea water, but is no one swimming, not because of the mud yellow sea water but because of  the "BE AWARE OF THE JELLY FISH" sign on a coconut tree by the sea side.

The beach is littered with some washed ashore junk, driftwood, coconuts and plastic bottles.

Cleanest Swimming Pool

During this trip we swam in 3 different swimming pools, and this swimming pool has the cleanest water. Thought small but well maintain. The Swimming pool is only for hotel guest. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Teresa and Mei Yin made new friends by the swimming pool of the inn.

Remember to bring your own swimming equipment here like water goggles, life jacket and lifebuoy.

The breakfast is included in room rate. A self service breakfast including sausages, eggs, toasts, butters and jams. As for the drinks, we have a choice of coffee, tea or just plain water.

After breakfast we checked out and continue our tour of Sabah.  First we made a detour to Papar Town before we head for Kinabalu National Park. Why visit such a small and uninteresting Papar Town ? Well it is the home town of our Grandmother (Uncle's mother). Because we did not have extra time so we did not drop in any of the relatives' house here.

On the way to Papar Town we visited this seaside housing estate called Summer Bay (Photo above). Summer Bay is developed by Wong Kok a well known housing developer in Sabah. We visited the children's playground there. It is isolated, we are the only people there.

We continued our journey to Rose Cabin near Kinabalu Park. As we must reach Kinabalu National Park before dark at around 6:00 pm, we have no time to stop at 1Borneo on the way. But we will visit this largest shopping mall of Borneo on our way back on 12th December.

In this small but power strong enough Malaysian made Myvy car, Uncle Wong drive toward  Ranau Town. The landscape gets rougher and the road climbs steeply. After an hour we saw Mount Kinabalu in a distant obscured by clouds and the rain gets worse. We drive with the windows open for nice fresh mountain air.

On the way up the mountains, the weather became chilly and the road started to be covered by fogs. This is a rare experience for Uncle Foong's family because this does not happens in Kuching City which is a low land area.

We saw many Roman Catholic churches on the way up. The main religion of the people there must be Roman Catholic.

Halfway up the mountains, a man waved a red flag signaling us to stop. Our car stopped and so is the black car behind us. There is a landslide happened ahead of us. A few tons of earth covered the road. The road crew manage to clear half of the road so they let the vehicles that are going down the hill pass the narrow cleared road first. The driver behind us was impatient and he get out of his car and continued to his destination by walking. We guessed he must be in a hurry.

After minutes of waiting, we finally get to continue our journey again.

Only after the trip we learned that a  big landslide on 1st December, 2009 (just 10 days ago) happened at this location of the mountain road.

This earth avalanche at 1,200m about 65 km from Kota Kinabalu stranded thousands of people including tourists who had to miss their flight home as there is no other road for them to travel back Kota Kinabalu airport.

We stopped for a while by this famous area in Kundasang to buy souvenirs, banana and large bottles of waters.

This road side has few rows of  market stalls with stacks of tropical fruits such as banana and durians. And stalls with locally made baskets. There are foods like prawn crackers, an endless variety of fruit, local rice packed  in neat stacks, local honey in bear bottles.

Uncle Wong bought a big bunch of Red Banana. This Red Banana is seldom found in Tawau. Though the banana is red outside, the inside is as white as the other type of Yellow or Green Banana.

In Kinabalu Park there is a variety of wild fruit trees ranging from rambutans, mangoes, durians and figs to the unusual taraps (Artocarpus odoratissimus) and mawang (Mangifera pajang) which tastes like a mango.

Common in the lowland forests are plants from the family of palms, gingers (Zingiberaceae family) and bamboos which are also found in the montane forests on higher elevations. Over 52 species of palms from 10 genera and 30 species of Zingiberaceae have been recorded within the confines of the Park. Six bamboo species are found within the Park and four just outside its limits. Many of the palms are climbers and their slender vines are covered with prickles which assist them in their quest to reach for sunlight.

Kinabalu Park is the richest place in the world for the tropical pitcher plant, Nepenthes.

Before night falls, we reached Rose Cabin and checked in. We got two rooms, Uncle Foong's room is outside the balcony. It is more convenient for him and his family to get a view of the Mount Kinabalu in the next morning.
