A Day Trip to Balung River of Tawau
"every tiny stream put together creates one big river."

Balung River of Tawau

Balung River of Tawau

After breakfast we went to Balung River. This is a half an hour drive from Tawau town to Balung Town.

A short distance walk from the river are some chalets. The walls of the chalet are made up of river stones, while the floors are wood paneling.

Balung resort is surrounded in a 3,000 acre plantation.  It is a good break from the city. A fresh water stream runs through the plantation. A suspension bridge provide the crossing across the river.

After Balung river we return back to Tawau town center for a tour. We stopped  at the Waterfront. Tawau Waterfront is one of the popular hang out places in Tawau. There are few benches and a children recreation park where local families spent their weekend afternoon. The evenings at Water Front bring beautiful sunsets framed against a timeless horizon.

On the West of Water Front is a fishing port where fishing vessels with the daily catches coming in fresh every day. Here you find boats for hire. Tawau waterfront may not be as glamorous as Kuching waterfront but you can witness the lives of local fishermen in their boats and participate in the loading and unloading of goods from neighboring islands onto sampans.

On the distance are fishing boats which bring in all the fresh sea foods every day. Tawau is one of the best places in Malaysia to eat seafood. Many West Malaysian come to this town just for the seafood.

At the end of the Water Front is the Al-Kauthar mosque. The King of Malaysia declared opened this RM31.5 million Al-Kauthar Mosque in 2004. The Al-Kauthar mosque is the Sabah largest mosque. This largest mosque can accommodate 17,000 worshipers at anytime. It is equipped with a library, a seminar hall and an administrative office.

This is a beautiful mosque. Thanks God for blessing us a safe and joyous holiday to Tawau and our onward journey.
