Kuching Trip  25th May to 5th June 2008

25th Sun 26th Mon 27th Tue 28th Wed 29th Thu 30th Fri 31st Sat 1st Sun 2nd Mon 3rd Tue 4th Wed 5th Thu

26th May 2008 Monday

I woke up around 7:00am while all the other were still sound asleep.  The first thing to do this morning is go to Tourism Office to pay for my booking for the 2 night Bako trip 28-29/8/2008. It was easy to find Tourism Office at the Old Court House at the opposit corner of General Post Office.  From Mandarin Inn in Jalan Green Hills where we stay, I had a plesent morning stroll along the Carpenter Street to Tourism Office.

As we passed the Chung Hua Primary No2 School I could not resist to pay a visit to this  highly durable wooden structure. This school behind Tua Pek Kong Temple is in prime commercial land. As I strolled the school ground I had a sad feeling of the torn and neglected school building.  How could the wealthy Chinese community poorly maintain their school which carry out the important mission of educating their children.

But my doubt and worry clear after a few day later when I read from news paper that this old school will be relocated to a new school building within this year and this old school building and compound will turn into a car park and public recreation area.

The management is converting  this school to Tua Pek Kong Temple's garden gardens and car park.

The above picture  taken on 26 May will soon become a history image of this old Chun Hua School.

And the new Chun Hua School will look like this :

During my high school days I often walk pass this pause resident with great admiration.  Today as we walk pass again I asked my son to guess what building is this. He guessed 'Chinese Temple' as to him there seem to be temples every where in Kuching. I told him the answer : This is the house of the richest man during my school day in the 1960s and today is still one of the wealthiest.

10:34 AM We walked pass the construction site of 388 room Novotel Interhill Kuching

This is 23-Storey new hotel comprised a 3-storey shopping centre to be completed by end of 2008.

During my high school day in late 1960s, this piece of hill slop was wild bushes of trees.

10:44 PM Finally we arrived at my mother school a school I spend 6 years of my teenage 30 over years ago.

Photo above is my family members first impression of my school I attended.

The administrative building remain not much changes. But the basket ball court in front the building is now car park. In my day very few teacher drive a car to school. Teachers and student went to school by bicycles and there were about 8 bicycles parking shelter for parking bicycle.

I went to schools by CLL Bus No: 8 from Batu Lintang to Post Office then walk pass St. Thomas Church, St. Mary School pass by Borneo Hotel before arriving to the school. Today, not a single bicycle is seen in school and in the city.

10: 58 AM  In my formal school garden. Arrowed (Block 1) is my Form 5 classroom in 1971.  The assembly field between Block 1 and Block 3  is now a garden.

In 2000, the school hall was formed on the badminton/ tennis court. A roof aligning Block 6 and Block 7 was constructed.

In the 1960s  Kucihngn High  School was a few wooden building and a Concrete  office building.

The amenities included administration office, teacher’s room, science laboratories, a library, two basketball courts, one badminton court and a store room. Other than the one-floor Block 2, there was five blocks of two-floor classrooms.

Today 2 wooden blocks classroom and the office building remain.. The other wooden block had been rebuild into concrete building.

SMK Kuching High won  the title "Best Red Crescent Youth Unit in Kuching Chapter 2007 for 14 consecutive years".   This news brought me great pride and joy. To me the unit is always the best even 30 over years ago.....

Red Cross Society Kuching High School 1971

BEFORE - 37 years ago

I couldn't get a photo of the Red Crescent today, but soon after reaching home I dick deep into old photo album and found this 37 years old photo of  Red Cross 1971.

If you could identify which one is me in the photo you could understand my pride of sharing the achievement the young Red Crescent today in SMK Kuching High.

This most colorful and most common damselfly in Malaysian reminded me of a eco- project we did not complete.

That year was 1970, Form 4.   Lai Jia Chang from Form 4 Science Class in response to the school authority started a "Science Club". One of the project of the Science Club was to develop a small piece of  sloppy land (between the canteen and the toilet) into a garden. I was among the first members  to joint the club and among the first batch of 'gardener' to plots that garden. However, after only a few weeks of tending the land the project was gradually ignored for other more interesting activities such as visiting Coco Coca production factory, visiting  Borneo Biscuit Factory and a trip to Semongok Center.  And that garden never materialize and gradually every one forgotten about it.

But I still regarded for this unfulfilled project I once committed. Today as I walked past that location, the school has already cemented the slop with steps displaying pot of plants. And on the location beside the once toilet for the boy is the above (above photo) a small square cement pool with blooming white water lily

Kuching High School is a Bi-lingual school. The Chinese Text books we used were published by 友聯出版社 of Hong Kong but printed in Malaysia. This 友聯 Chinese Subject books were commonly used by private Chinese schools not only in Malaysia but also  in Hong Kong and other south west Asia countries and in the overseas except China and Taiwan.

The favorite children magazine at that time was the monthly 兒童樂園 and 亞洲畫報.

11:31 AM Time to leave. I have a last look at my school.  I may not return for another 30 years or never. No mater what ever changes, I wish the trees beside the school gates will ever remain protected . They were young tree when I was in the school and today have grew so mighty tall and strong. That someday my grandchildren comes back to see them still remain standing tall.

The Spring Mall - The largest lifestyle mall in SarawakThe Spring Mall - The largest lifestyle mall in Sarawak

7:00 PM Uncle Fook Vui brought us to The Spring Mall - The largest lifestyle mall in Sarawak. Clean, spacey and not crowded is my unique impression on this mall that make itself stand apart from other malls we visited in Malaysia.

The Spring Mall is only a 10 minutes walk for us from the house of my father in Kenyalang Park.

We were all hungry and head direct to the 'foodbazaar' on the Ground Floor (1st Floor)

The Spring Mall is still new and fresh with  half of the retailers still not opened yet.
